(Please describe where you were and what you were doing when the earthquake hit Nepal on 25 April 2015?)
I was at home, in Kapan, Kathmandu, watching TV.
(Please describe your immediate mental and physical reaction, and your response following the quake.
I tried to reach the safest point without panicking. Safest point at the time I reached was under the door, after I checked on family members, making sure that they were safe. As soon as the earthquake stopped, togther with my family members I reached an open ground.
(What were your most important concerns at that time?)
My immediate concern was how to be safe and how to keep my family safe.
(What types of information were you looking for at that time? Did you have access to all the information you needed?)
I tried to contact my other family members in my village to find out about their saftey. It was not possible at first, but after many attempts, I was able to talk to some.
(How helpful were news media such as radio, television, newspapers, online news portals, etc in informing you immediately after the quake and the days following it? Please note their strengths as well as weaknesses).
Immediately after the quake, it was very difficult to get accurate picture of the damages. The only news we got were eyewitness accounts on Radio Nepal. I found them very helpful. But they were not very authentic because people have the tendency to hype the event. The following day, I read the newspaper Kantipur. It was filled with picture stories. I found them interesting and helpful.
(Please describe how you spent the week following the quake– what you did, etc.).
I spent time building temporary shelters in my village in Kavrepalanchok.
(Any memorable facts or incidents during the week following the quake?)
Working as a translator with a Hungarian Doctors’ Camp in my village was memorable. And helping out injured villagers in Bhumlutar VDC of Kavre.
(What are some of the lessons that we should take away from the 25 April 2015 quake in Nepal?)
We should learn about the fact that a disaster can happen anytime. So we need to be prepared for it. That way we won’t suffer like we did on the April 25 quake.
