(Please describe where you were and what you were doing when the earthquake hit Nepal on 25 April 2015?)
I was at the so called earthquake jeopardous area, Ason, Kathmandu. I was on bike with my 17-year-old son on the back.
(Please describe your immediate mental and physical reaction, and your response following the quake.
I did stop my bike as people started to run here & there, shouting. Then, as my bike fell down, I came to know there was an earthquake. Then I got off and started to search for a safe space. We stayed inside a nearby cottage untill the EQ lasted.
(What were your most important concerns at that time?)
Me and sons’ life. Had thought about the possible destruction in and around the area.
(What types of information were you looking for at that time? Did you have access to all the information you needed?)
Found a safe place to sit and tried to find information about family safety but was unable since the mobile network was not working.
(How helpful were news media such as radio, television, newspapers, online news portals, etc in informing you immediately after the quake and the days following it? Please note their strengths as well as weaknesses).
After the EQ, TV and FM stations, online sites, and newspaper were doing a great job. They were alerting, providing information and educating people about the disaster and about personal safety. However, some of the information they collected in a hurry and broadcast had to be corrected later. That kept people in confusion for the time being.
(Please describe how you spent the week following the quake– what you did, etc.).
Stayed safely with family. Monitoing the disaster due to EQ in and around KTM. Also, planning for safety measures in the time of possible disasters in future.
(Any memorable facts or incidents during the week, following the quake?)
There was a lot of fear among the people b/c of continuous aftershocks, and realized that life is the most important of all the things in the world.
(What are some of the lessons that we should take away from the 25 April 2015 quake in Nepal?)
1. Houses should not be more than 2 storeys with some open space for tent, they better be of wood, bambo and CGI sheets.
2. Make all people alert about posssible natural disasters and safety measures.
3. Always prepare for necessary rescue and relief materials and equipment, esp by the government and I/NGOs.
4. News media should always try to alert and inform people before, during and after a disaster.
5. Media should also play a vital role in making govt and other stakeholders alert at the time of rescue, relief distribution, reconstruction and rehabilitation process.
Thanks.
