(Please describe where you were and what you were doing when the earthquake hit Nepal on 25 April 2015?)
With my mother and brother under my bed in the third floor of a building on a wall system.
(Please describe your immediate mental and physical reaction, and your response following the quake.
My mother was too worried, I had to be the calm guy. I was surprised to see my brother as calm but we were more focused on calming our mother down so that she didn’t panic and end up risking her life.
(What were your most important concerns at that time?)
My brother’s and mother’s safety. For some reason, I was trying to cover my brother’s body with mine, which made me feel more secured, and also more secured for my brother.
(What types of information were you looking for at that time? Did you have access to all the information you needed?)
Amidst the rumors flying all around, there was one reliable source of information for me that day. I was listening to Radio Nepal the entire day, and even during the night without sleeping. I believed no rumors, I was getting information on safety and possible aftershock information through Radio Nepal.
(How helpful were news media such as radio, television, newspapers, online news portals, etc in informing you immediately after the quake and the days following it? Please note their strengths as well as weaknesses).
Radio Nepal was a good source for me. Since I believed no other rumors, and didn’t have access to other forms of media for a long time, I can’t give my opinion on this particular question other than saying that Radio Nepal was with the citizens of the country when they needed them the most.
(Please describe how you spent the week following the quake– what you did, etc.).
Tents, mostly outdoors. House is deemed restricted area by the government, so we will still have to live outdoors for quite some time.
(Any memorable facts or incidents during the week, following the quake?)
My brother climbed Dharahara 2 days before the earthquake. The fact that it is no longer there kind of overshadows any other memories for me.
(What are some of the lessons that we should take away from the 25 April 2015 quake in Nepal?)
We need to have the “jhatpat jhola” with us. A family should be well prepared for any such risks. While building houses, it is important that it is made well, so that it can withstand larger magnitude earthquakes.
There is a trend that people who build houses just to sell them don’t make the quality as good as it would be if they would be living in it. The nation should have a system wherein all the houses and their quality is monitored to make sure that they can resist larger quakes.
