(Please describe where you were and what you were doing when the earthquake hit Nepal on 25 April 2015?)
I was at the back of Kathmandu Mall with a sister from my work place; her cousin brother and nephew were also with us.
(Please describe your immediate mental and physical reaction, and your response following the quake).
I could not figure out why people were running and screaming until the Dharahara fell.
(What were your most important concerns at that time?)
The most important thing was to find a safe place to stay.
(What types of information were you looking for at that time? Did you have access to all the information you needed?)
I wanted to make sure that my family and friends were safe. But I could not contact them because the phone network was jammed.
(How helpful were news media such as radio, television, newspapers, online news portals, etc in informing you immediately after the quake and the days following it? Please note their strengths as well as weaknesses).
Facebook was the most easy way to find the updates from friends and different media. Since we were leaving in a tent, radio was the most helpful way to get news. I was very impressed with 24-hour service of Radio Nepal.
(Please describe how you spent the week following the quake– what you did, etc.).
For first three days of the earthquake, I spent my days chatting with neighbors in the tent. From the fourth day, I started going out around the city. I visited Mangalbazar, Baneshwor, Kamalpokhari and some nearby places.
(Any memorable facts or incidents during the week following the quake?)
Its not a memorable fact as such, but the good thing about the earthquake was that it created bonding with our neighbors. I got to know that my community has so many wonderful people.
(What are some of the lessons that we should take away from the 25 April 2015 quake in Nepal?)
Everyone should be well-prepared for such a type of calamity. Most importantly, we must build safe houses in safe areas.
