(Please describe where you were and what you were doing when the earthquake hit Nepal on 25 April 2015?)
I was at my home in Butwal, watching TV and ironing clothes.
(Please describe your immediate mental and physical reaction, and your response following the quake).
it started shaking and I looked around. My home theater, TV and everything around were moving. Then I grabbed my mobile and ran downstairs.
(What were your most important concerns at that time?)
I was thinking if that was happening all over Nepal or just in my place here. I was wondering what was the situation around.
(What types of information were you looking for at that time? Did you have access to all the information you needed?)
I started searching for information on its impact and the places it had occurred. Yes, I found it via the internet.
(How helpful were news media such as radio, television, newspapers, online news portals, etc in informing you immediately after the quake and the days following it? Please note their strengths as well as weaknesses).
The media outlets were helpful as telephone communication wasn’t working… The internet (mostly Facebook) provided many quick information updates.
(Please describe how you spent the week following the quake– what you did, etc.).
I spent thinking how could I individually play any role in helping people around who were suffering. I spent my time in searching the news around, getting in touch with people and organisations working for relief programs. My daily routine took a different course as my time was spend on such activities. Then I got in touch with my friends abroad and looked for help from them. All of their positive responses encouraged me to begin the campaign “Destination Sindhupakchowk” and with the local friends’ help and support and help from Nepalis abroad I ran the campaign of collecting funds, foods, and other items for a week and on 06-05-2015 I, along with a brother, reached the destination. We stayed there for a couple of days, at Tipeni village, and returned after distributing the materials.
(Any memorable facts or incidents during the week following the quake?)
The nights I spend online just for the campaign work rather than for other reasons.
(What are some of the lessons that we should take away from the 25 April 2015 quake in Nepal?)
Preventive measures should be taken while building the houses. Focusing on strength of the house rather than storyes of the house.
